Case Description
In March 2006 I had a root canal and was given a porcelain crown afterwards. A couple of months later I began having strong pain in that tooth everytime I ate or drank something hot. I went to have my dentist check it for me. I was in my second trimester of a pregnancy and since they couldn't do an X-ray, the dentist checked the tooth to make sure the crown wasn't coming loose and that there wasn't any pain when she pushed on it or tapped it. She assessed that the pain was probably due to the increased blood flow during pregnancy and dismissed it. The pain seemed to subside after a couple of months, but never fully went away.

December 4 2006 my baby was born and I am now 6 1/2 weeks postpartum. In the last week the pain has become more severe and radiates into my upper gums around that tooth and left cheek. Since I am not pregnant anymore, I can't imagine this has anything to do with blood flow as the dentist thought before. I should also mention that when she put the crown in she said it was a little high, but since I thought my bite felt normal, she went with my approval not to shorten it any further. I do have a habit of clenching my teeth, so I wonder if this could be causing the increased pain or if this is something I need to have checked again. ? Thanks!

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

Go ahead and get an x-ray now. Also, have the dentist check your bite again. The x-ray may reveal a crack or a possible infection, or perhaps another cavity.
