Case Description
I recently moved to Portland and don't have a regular dentist here yet. Just before I left Virginia in April, I had an impacted wisdom tooth (#32) extracted because it had started abscessing. For several months, it was steadily healing (rather slowly because I'm 28 years old and also a smoker - which is bad, I know). However, in the past week, the area surrounding the mostly-healed extraction site has become increasingly swollen and irritated. Frequent saltwater rinses haven't been helping. At first, it was minor, but now the inside of my right cheek is also starting to swell and the right side of my face feels sore. So far, the pain has been manageable with ibuprofen.

It's not enough of an emergency to go to the ER, but I know this situation needs to be looked at ASAP. I called four different dentists earlier today, but it seems that most dentists in this area are either open Monday-Thursday or not accepting new patients. Since the pain isn't excruciating, can I safely wait until Monday to have this looked at? Is there somewhere in Portland that will accept such a case on a Friday or Saturday?

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.
