Case Description
I am a professional woman who recently moved to Portland and have no insurance.ᅠ I broke my upper plate months ago, had it relined but it doesn't fit properly.ᅠ The new, big problem is that the buildup (calcification?) that occurred on my lower plate over time was cutting my mouth to ribbons.ᅠ So I sat and peeled it all off.ᅠ Now, although they are nice and pink, I can clearly see each and every tooth.ᅠ I cannot afford to have a reline!ᅠ Should I take some (nail) acrylic and brush it on lightly (on the backside), just to protect the teeth/prevent them from falling out?ᅠ And, I have exhausted all avenues for finding someone to help me get new dentures - cheap!! - and these are literally on their last legs.ᅠ Which leaves me jobless (I can't find work in my field with no teeth!)ᅠ Help!!!

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

Sorry to hear about your problems with the dentures. It is not uncommon to need to have a reline adjusted 1 or 2 times so I would see the dentist who did it.

For the lower if you only removed the tartar then there shouldn''''t be a problem withthe teeth staying in the plate so please don;t add acrylic to them.

There is a free clinic at New Height church that may help. the other option is the Seamar clinic that has sliding scales and they may be able to help.

One more option but would take longer to get done is the dental school over in portland.

hope that helps

I am so sorry about your situation- and I can completely understand. This is going to sound kinda wierd, but I work with a denturist quite frequently and I feel that he is (in most cases) cheaper than a regular dentist. Their education is not as broad or extensive, but their knowledge about dentures can exceed the average dentist as they often do many more partials and dentures and most of the time have a lab in their office. You could try Kurt Bywaters - they have 2 denturists on staff and multiple locations. Lake Oswego 503-634-8060, or Beaverton 503-644-8080. They may be able to answer you acrylic question as well. Call me if I can be of any further assistance. Laura Matin DDS 503-690-0400

This is in reply to your inquiry to our office regarding the problems with your dentures. Our office does not repair or deal with dentures, since our specialty involves gum surgery and dental implants only. Since you have financial concerns, your best bet may be to check for "Denturists" in the yellow pages. These are specialty denture labs which can help with denture problems at reduced costs from a regular dentist. Unfortunately, we do not know any of the labs personaly, but it is worth checking into.
